Finding the Perfect Puppy for your family
Did the Savvy Family find the perfect dog? The answer is… I don’t know. Maybe, but probably not. While there are many things to look for when selecting a puppy the ability to wink, in my experience, is nowhere near the top of that list. Imagine a year from now, coming home from a long day in the salt mines to find that your now 200 lb little bundle of joy has just eaten your favorite chair and is halfway through the sofa as you walk through the door. As shock turns to horror, the dog lifts his head and looks you in the eye… then winks. Everything’s all better, right?
In the world of instant gratification that we live in, it’s no wonder when we decide that we want something, many of us simply go out and get it… now. We tell ourselves that we’ll figure the rest of it out later. Speaking from experience, this strategy rarely works. Just ask my ex-wife.
Unfortunately, I’ve discovered that many families put more thought into selecting a brand of toothpaste than they do selecting a family pet. The irony is, in many of those families, I find the tube of toothpaste actually lasts longer than the dog does. Perhaps someday your children will learn what the CIA now knows, water boarding is not the best long-term solution.
It’s no wonder that some people make snap decisions when it comes to adding a dog to the family pack? I have a cousin who decided to have a baby because she loves how babies smell. Being the father of three boys I warned her that while children do continue to smell for a lifetime, that cute baby smell goes away on the second box of Pampers! Be careful what you wish for.
So, how should you go about picking the perfect puppy for your family? Great question, I’m glad I asked it. While I have no magic beans, there are some things you can do to greatly improve your odds of having a successful adoption. Over the past 15 years, I’ve worked with hundreds of families training their puppies and dogs. Most call me when they realize that little wink thing isn’t working. Based on my experience, let me give you a few things to consider before you go out and thrust your family dynamics into chaos for the next 15 years.
The good new is, when it comes to canines, your choices are almost unlimited. Dogs come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments. Each specific breed has characteristics that most dogs of that breed will exhibit. Doing your homework and selecting the right breed is the single most important thing you can do to ensure a happy ending to this four-legged story. For any information regarding our services please visit at: www.smilingdogpetservices.com or you can Contact us at bill@smilingdogpetservices.com

Snap Lab Question
Is there a way to Train your dog to become Alpha?
I have 2 dogs one is a younger Lab pup, the other a Australian Sheppard mix, 6 years old. We use to have an older chow that was alpha over the Sheppard, but know she has passed and we have a new pup. The puppy abuses the Sheppard even though it could kill it with one snap, it refuses to defend itself.
How old is the puppy? Young puppies often have what is called a puppy license with older dogs, which means that the older dog will let them get away with atrocious behaviour. This has nothing to do with later ranking, just that the older dog is indulgent and maybe over-indulgent.
My first dog was a dominant, alpha b*tch who would come down HARD on any disrespect from adolescent and adult dogs, but who would let puppies climb all over her, tug her ears, yank her fur etc. Her strongest reaction ever towards a young puppy was to pin it down under one of her front paws to keep it quiet – and boy had that little girl been pushing it.
My current dog is self-confident, but more a live and let live kind of character. She’s content with a lower ranking position among the household pets, but while her initial reaction to a provocation from an older dog is to back down, she will not put up with any bullying from other dogs. She will not start a fight, but if her backing down is not respected, she will finish it – but of course I stop any conflicts before the escalate. She’s also big on dog politeness and will correct impolite behaviour from dogs younger than herself immediately, which is why she is quite popular with friends who have young puppies, because she teaches them dog manners and doesn’t put up with any puppy nonsense.
In any case, there is no way you can train your dog to become alpha, and it is not healthy to try to maintain an unnatural ranking between the dogs because you prefer one dog to be alpha and not the other. This usually goes terribly wrong.
If your puppy is younger than 4-5 months old, what you can and should do, however, is to stop the pup every time it crosses the line with your Australian Shepherd mix and give the mix preferential treatment to help her establish her superior rank; she gets attention first, she gets treats first etc. If your puppy is still young, it can be a good idea to find an older dog who is good with puppies, but who will lay down the law, to interact with your pup. It is important that he learn proper dog etiquette, because while young puppies are given a great deal of slack of the majority of adult dogs, adolescent and adult dogs are not.
If your puppy is older than 4-5 months old, still stop it every time it becomes too rough, but hold back on any special treatment toward either of them until you are sure which one of them is the dominant dog. Adolescent dogs will often try out behaviours and test ranking orders, but an adolescent dog trying out dominant behaviours is not necessarily a dominant dog…it could be merely testing the waters. Once you lab is around 8-9 months – 1 year old, you will have a better idea of the pack-ranking dynamics between the two and this is when you go in and support the higher ranking dog, regardless of who it is, to stabilize their relationship as fast as possible. Support again means by giving the top dog special priviledges.
Introducing a small dog to a BIG dog?
About a month ago I bought a pomeranian puppy. Problem is that my boyfriend has a big lab/chow cross (Cooper). We introduced them for the first time and the little one chased Cooper around and barked at him and he took it quite well. UNTIL she stepped on his tail. He snapped at her. He literally weighs almost 80 pounds more than her and I’m terrified that she’s going to get hurt.
What do I do?
Cooper is about 4 years old. My boyfriend tells me that when he was a puppy he played too rough with a kitten and ended up killing it. He definitely felt bad about it and was really sad afterwards. Is this awful occurence something I should be concerned about now, three years later?
make sure they are only together supervised. If possible, keep them on opposite sides of a baby gate where they can sniff at eachother without confrontation. It may take lots of times of them being around eachother until they get along fine, but if they never do, just keep them apart. Especially if your boyfriend’s dog is much older, he may not have the patience for a puppy with so much energy. Just work on it a bit at a time.
