Can we network printers using an USB hub?
Okay, here’s the deal… Roomie has a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop, I have a Dell Latitude D600. Connected to the Inspiron is a 7 port USB hub (AC powered), to which she has connected her external hard drive and a Lexmark X2690 all-in-one printer. Occasionally, I have an external hard drive connected to mine.
Is it possible to connect my laptop to the USB hub and use the printer as well? Would this require her system to be on ALL the time, or would just having the hub’s power supply plugged in be enough?
If you change the way the hub is configured it may work. Instead of the hub connecting to your roomie’s computer, connect the main cable to the printer and plug each of the computers into the hub. That way each computer has access to the printer. The bad new is that you can no longer attach any external drives to the hub in this configuration, the good new is that roomie’s computer doesn’t have to be on for it to work. You can always attach your external drives to other USB ports on your computers.
The other way to do this is to set up a simple network with a switch (looks like a router, but basically splits network connections). Connect both your computers to the switch, establish a network, and you will both be able to use the printer if your roomie’s computer is on with it as it is configured currently.
Last way is to get a router with a USB print server port on it. Connect the router to your internet modem and then connect both computers to the router. Attach the printer to the printer port on the router. Now you have a real network and can both of you can use the printer without the other’s computer being on.
The first option is easy, the second and third options are more complex because you have to worry about ip addresses etc. and it takes a little knowhow to set it up.

So I’m thinking of buying my first computer. A buddy found a pretty good deal and I wonder what you all think about it. It’s a package deal that includes the Acer Aspire AM1641-U1521A, an Acer P Series 22″ LCD Monitor, and a Lexmark X2690 All-in-one printer, copier, and scanner for $630.00. Is this a good deal? Is this a good computer?
