Lexmark S405 Printer Review
Clad in frosted black and light grey, the Lexmark S405 retains high-gloss streaks, like the top of the totally horizontal Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). Paper is actually picked and rolled from the ADF in a very similar manner as blank sheets are picked out from a horizontal paper tray.
Blank sheets on this particular unit still feed through a close to vertical hopper around the rear, although this one has the new development of a little slide, down the right-hand side, which in turn adjusts the paper guides from A4 to photograph papers. The output tray draws out of the front, along with a steeply raked end, that flips up to capture output pages.
The control panel, with its fairly incongruous acrylic band over the top, is well set out, with a number pad intended for fax utilization as well as a basic, four-button navigation set which, paired with the backlit, 2-line by 16-character Liquid crystal display, provides very good control of the machine’s applications. Four, silver buttons above the screen opt for copy, scan, fax and picture printing settings.
Same with the new Canon and HP designs,Lexmark has turned to single ink cartridges with its new Vixiz ink system, with the semi-permanent print heads now not built-into the cartridges. Even though it’ll need plenty of jottling just to position the Lexmark cartridges because it wouldn’t fit in easily to the head carrier.
The new product range provides a little more realism to print speeds. Lexmark promises 17ppm and 11ppm for black and colour prints, respectively, but we saw 5.36ppm for five pages of mono text, increasing to 6.78ppm on the extended, 20-page document. The black text and colour graphics print resulted in a rate of 4.11ppm.
These are really not bad rates regarding an inkjet all-in-one, although they are once again lengthened by the occasionally drawn out processing of pages prior to the commencement of print – we observed 26 seconds in one occasion.
15 x 10cm photo prints varied from 43 to 52 seconds, and this is really noteworthy for a unit found in this class. This goes for photograph reproduction, too, though possibly we’d drop the ‘very’. The test photographs revealed fine amounts of fine detail throughout both light and dark parts of the images and even though there was less red than in the originals, this is less of a problem as compared to too much red.
Colour on plain paper, as in business graphics, is clear with no visible dither patterns and registration of black text over colour is outstanding. A colour photocopy shows a reduced amount of lightening of coloured parts than in a number of of the machine’s rivals, also.
Black text is usually nice and clean, though under a loupe you can view a bit of feathering into the paper fibres and generally print is to a better standard than from earlier Lexmark all-in-ones.
Lexmark S405 ink cartridges happen to be available in two volumes. High consumables costs do not have anything to do with print technology, of course, and are purely a selling choice on exactly how much to ask from you for the cartridges. Page costs remain hidden to many new consumers and may come as an unpleasant shock.
This is the first of Lexmark’s latest variety of inkjet all-in-ones we’ve analyzed and in general improvements are impressive. Whilst ink expenses are actually still too high, the further overall economy of individual ink cartridges, whereby you do not end up having to chuck a tri-colour cartridge out whenever a single ink is exhausted, is a bit of compensation. Rates of speed are very good plus print quality is enhanced.

What’s the best way to recycle used print cartridges?
I’ve got at least 3 dozen used cartridges that I’ve meant to recycle in some way, hopefully for some financial benefit. They are HP, Canon and Lexmark. I’m hoping to hear ideas from people who do this regularly. Thanks!

Kodak ESP 7 refill question?
I have a burning question. I want a Kodak ESP 7, but I currently own this setup. A Lexmark X-1200 (solely for scanning) and a Canon i455. I am OK with this setup, but I prefer and All-in-One. The thing is though, is that my Canon is refillable. I haven’t bought an ink cartridge for it in over 1 year. I know that ink for hte ESP 7 is cheap, but like hell I want to spend $10 or $15 anyways. Is it possible to refill the ink cartridges on the ESP 7?
