PS what does max iso range mean, and is that good for this camera?
This is an excellent camera, and at quite a reasonable price. The ISO range refers to the range of possible shutter speeds on the camera, which allows the camera to be adjusted (manually or automatically) to ambient light conditions. At this range, it may also be used for certain special effects, such as capturing motion by holding the shutters open so that the action appears as a blur across the image.
Also of interest is the 5x optical zoom, which will get you a much wider range of zoom than the 3x of a standard digital camera. Digital zoom is nothing special, simply blowing up the image that’s already been taken, identical to zooming in on a picture on a computer.
One final advantage is the AA size batteries which the camera takes. Kodak makes a rechargeable 2xAA battery pack that is reasonably priced, and the batteries have the advantage of being able to be switched for regular AAs should the batteries die. Most digital cameras on the market use a proprietary rechargeable battery pack, and unless you buy multiple battery packs, you’re out of luck if your camera dies.
The camera has an extremely sharp image sensor–12 megapixels! This is probably overkill, and you would probably be fine with a less expensive camera. Poster-size prints (20″x30″) are shot full-quality with a 5-megapixel camera, so unless you’re planning to print pictures the size of murals, you may want to go with a less expensive model (8 MP or so), or at the least, use a lower resolution setting on the camera.
All in all, the Kodaks are excellent cameras. They now have a newly redesigned menu which is very easy to use, and features full descriptions of every setting which are readable from the menu itself. The computer software is also very intuitive, and the camera can be recharged (if equipped) via the USB sync cable.
Do you need to use the Easyshare software with a Kodak camera?
I just bought a brand new Easyshare z885 camera and got software in the box. I don’t really feel the need to use the software (I usually transfer pictures through a printer or memory card reader) and I don’t really want to install more software (although I DO have room for it). Is there some kind of advantage to using the software or some feature that I’d miss out on by NOT using it? Also, what is that cheap clear plastic thing and the camera-USB cable for? I haven’t been able to figure that out.
You don’t need the software because your computer probably has phote software already. The clear thing enables any Kodak camera to sit on the printer dock. You probably should keep the usb cable to upload pictures to your computer, but if you have a computer that takes memory cards, memory sticks, or thumb drives, then you’ll be okay with out it.
