Step by Step Guide To Knitting A Baby Blanket

Can’t think of a perfect gift to give your friend during a baby shower? Why not think about knitting your own baby blanket? The recipient child’s parents will surely appreciate this practical yet personal gift.

This gift idea is so simple that even a novice knitter can perform this with ease. And the best thing about making this item is that the finishing product of your knitted baby blanket is quite flexible in size, ranging between 24 to 36 inches.

First, you need to gather the following: knitting needle point protectors, knitting baskets and stitch markers, knitting needles that are sized 10 to 11, and yarns. For the yarn, you need to go for soft and pastel colors that are light to medium weight. You can practice knit a couple of squares to determine which size you want.

Start by casting 120 stitches and produce approximately 10 rows that will serve as the border for your blanket. Follow the same from the first up to the tenth row. For your guidance, you will be using the code K and P for “Knit” and “Purl”, respectively. In addition, the terms K7 simply means you have to make 7 stitches and P refers to the purl stitch.

For the first row, K7 and mark the sides to designate the border, then purl the last 7 stitches. After that, place another marker and K7. For the second row, knit and on the third row another K7, P, and another marker, then K7. For the fourth row, Knit. For the fifth row, follow the same procedures as the third row. Then, knit rows six to ten. You need to follow the fifth step for fourteen times until the end. After that, you must cast off your knitting to finish off your baby blanket.

As a reminder though, purchase more than 12 ounces of yarn if you are planning to knit a large baby blanket. You must also secure additional yarn since they might come in handy if you make a lot of mistakes initially with your knitting.

Knit Baby Question

Knitting Baby Beanie Circular Needles subsituted for DoublePointed?

Can anyone give me a good simple pattern to knit a baby beanie? I’m planning on using circular needles (because double pointed look so hard). I’ve found a couple of free patterns for double pointed needles does any one know if I can I substitute circular ones? I’m a novice knitter and only knitted flat things on regular needles any advice would be great!

Well, dpns, like any other needles, do have a learning curve, but they aren’t hard to use. You can always knit a hat flat on a circular or regular straight needle, adding one extra stitch to a circular pattern for the seam, and then sew up the back at the end. There are some very good patterns for baby hats on-line, just google free baby hat knitting patterns.

need help making a preemie cap?

I am a high school teacher and my class has decided to knit blankets and caps for preemies. We were given knitting needles in sizes 8-10 and bought Bernat Baby Coordinates yarn. I searched for easy patterns for preemie caps, but everything uses size 3-5 needles and that would mean our caps would be too big with the needles we have. Anyone have an easy (and I stress easy) sew up pattern for caps using this size needles? Thanks

The real key is to adjust the pattern to fit the needle size and gauge that you have. knit a 4 inch square, measure the number of stitches per inch, and the number of rows per inch.
calculate the difference between your gauge and the one listed on your pattern. adjust the pattern accordingly.
eg. if the pattern says there are 8 stitches to the inch, and your gauge is 4 stitches to the inch, just reduce the number of stitches to cast on by a half. this is one of the best things about knitting, is that it teaches kids the practical uses of math. PS my nephew thinks that you should figure out the percentage difference between your gauge and the pattern gauge, and calculate your stitch changes by multiplying the stitch number by the percent increase. very cool. also, since hospitals have preemies, and full term babies as well, do not worry, the caps will be used, regardless.

The album that carries U2 into its 25th year–and likely the mixed blessings of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame–is one of its most frank and focused since the days of October and War. But its gestation was anything but simple, in part salvaged from ’03 sessions the band deemed subpar. Enter Steve Lillywhite, the band’s original producer and sometime collaborator in the decades since, who helped re…
