4 Helpful Tips to Prevent Fading and UV Damage to Your Framed Art and Paper Certificates
UV damage is a significant threat to your University Diploma, Medical Certificates, or other valuable artifacts. In the case of your “one of a kind” certificates the first thing to disappear is the signature. The standard ink used in colored pens is ultra sensitive to light and quickly fades away. Some black inks can be very unstable also.
Document preservation is often overlooked until it is much too late. Once the damage is done it cannot be undone. Short of expensive restoration, your valued certificates, documents, and photos have lost their crisp appearance forever. If the item is a treasured piece of original artwork, restoration would not help you to recoup all of the lost value.
Some artifacts that are more susceptible to UV damage include Oriental rugs, Oriental woodblock prints, watercolors, and dyed cloths or sensitive tapestries. To preserve these items you should consider moving them to a darker location in your home or office. At the very least keep them out of the direct line of sunlight and don’t place them directly under a fluorescent light.
To prevent further fading and UV damage, follow these 4 helpful tips:
- 1) For items that have been signed with an ink pen, it is best to create a replica. Simply take a high resolution photo and display the reproduction. Print your display copy on a laser printer. Ink from a standard inkjet printer will fade quickly. Then for safe keeping, file your original away in a secure location. This is a very common practice in document preservation. As an added benefit, you won’t need to worry about theft if the item is of great value and displayed in a public area.
- 2) Use ultraviolet filtering Plexiglas in place of standard glass in your framed documents or artwork. Regular glass provides little or no UV protection. Regular glass may also break during shipping or in the event of an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or other natural disaster.
- 3) Move sensitive items to a darker location. In the case of artwork and tapestries, you are much better off if you can display them in a room that has no exterior windows. Fluorescent lights can be equally as brutal.
- 4) Reduce the effect of fluorescent lights in the office. This is easier than you may think. Simply cover the fluorescent tubes with a UV filtering sleeve.
Document preservation begins by following this basic advice. Take action now to eliminate further UV damage and fading. For maximum protection combine some or all of these tips. In addition there is one more step you can take as you mount your framed art and paper certificates back on the wall to keep them looking great. Just add some Museum Putty to anchor the certificate frame to the wall. The putty will not only keep the frame straight, it will also keep it from falling off the hook during a hurricane or earthquake and experiencing damage when it hits the floor.
