Are ink ribbons for typewriters interchangeable?
I am considering buying a Remington Rand no. 5 from the 30′s and it doesn’t come with an ink ribbon. I’m having difficulty finding Remington ink ribbons, so I was wondering if the typewriter would work with other types of ribbons. Anyone have an answer? Also, anyone know where I could get Remington ink ribbons? I’m sure they’re out there somewhere. Thanks!
RIBBONS are virtually always interchangeable. You can still buy ribbons at any office supply store (you want 1/2″ usually). Then you just hook the little prongs on your ribbon reel through the fabric, spool it up by hand, and hook the other end onto the other reel. You have to get it going in the right direction. So type a few letters and note which way the spools turn, then wrap the ribbon such that it will be getting pulled by the typewriter, not pushed.
Ribbon REELS are NOT interchangeable usually, and you would need your specific brand’s.
So if you have the spools/reels that the ribbon goes on, or if it is dried out, you can just go buy a ribbon at Staples or whatever. If you don’t have the reels at all, you will have to do some hunting.
Typewriter Alignment?
I need to fix a small malfunction on my new typewriter. It is definitely not new by age. I bought a new ink ribbon for it today, and installed it correctly.
The type bars work fine, except when transitioning from upper-case back to lower-case.
The lower-case letters print half way for about 15 strokes before re-aligning correctly and printing the full letter.
What could the problem be? Should I try and mess with the platen?

Look at the botton of the keys, there is a screw to set the height the keys hit the ribbon. Loosen the screw and drop the keys until it hits the right spot on the ribbon.
