Can ms-excel remove dashes under such a complicated condition?
Hi! Please help with this MS-Excel problem that is facing me. I’m in the printer accessories business and one of the things I sell is this HP Maintenance Kit C3971-67903, which is also known as C397167903 (without the dash). But since customers normally search this item using the dash, I’d like to use the one with the dash. I have put three of my suppliers’ price lists into a spreadsheet, and I noticed that one of my suppliers listed this item without the dash, so I wonder if there is a way for excel to automatically add a dash in the right place?

Sorry, the title of this question should be “Can ms-excel add dashes under such a complicated condition?” instead of “Can ms-excel remove dashes under such a complicated condition?”. Sorry about that.
You could use this formula for all items in your list, provided they should all be 11 digits (5 then – then 5). It will check for the dash first before adding it in.
=IF(MID(A1,6,1)<> “-”, LEFT(A1,5) & “-” & RIGHT(A1,5), A1)
