Is it more cost-effective to print out a manuscript at home or at FedEx Kinko?
I have a manuscript for a book about Polish Jewish poetry that works out to just shy of a hundred pages, double spaced, Times New Roman at 12 point. I have a Hewlett-Packard printer at home that takes 74 and 74XL ink cartridges, and I have more reams of paper than I need in the near future. I plan to send the manuscript to three different publishers more or less simultaneously.
Before I specifically answer what you asked, let me just tell you that the last thing you want to do is try to show up the publisher’s page layout and typography people. Let them do their job. If the publisher wants double-spaced Times at 12 points, give him that. It’s for a good reason, and not just to test you.
You say you have plenty of paper, but you don’t say what kind of paper you have. Use your best, non-fancy paper. It should be white, it should be neither too thin (onion skin) nor too thick. Also, you don’t say how many 74 or 74XL cartridges you have, or if you have any. So I’m going to assume you have just one 74XL. I think that should be enough for one copy of the manuscript. I too have an HP printer that uses 74 (black) and 75 (tri-color) cartridges, a Photosmart C4580. I print out a lot of images, both black and white, and color, so I’m only guessing that a 74XL will last you for a hundred pages of double-spaced black text. If you have to go out and buy another cartridge, that’s another $30 you have to spend.
There’s a copy shop near where I live, they charge 10 cents a page, black and white, regardless of the content. So a hundred pages would cost you $10. Last time I checked, they charged $3 to open a file, and it has to be Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF. To put it in a ring binder with cover would be an additional $5 at that place. The FedEx place where I live is cheaper than the small copy shop, so basically I’m saying it shouldn’t cost you more than $18 to print your manuscript at FedEx. But at home, if you have ink left over afterwards, you can use it to print other documents, perhaps smaller documents that would just be too expensive to have printed out at FedEx.

I want to remove Hewlett Packard pop-ups from my screen, constantly telling me that my cartridge is low on ink
HP says that they cannot remove the pop-ups because I don’t buy their cartridges. The pop-ups occur every time I print a document even though both cartridges have just been refilled and are working very well.
try removing all the printer management software from the system startup. In other words just load the printer drivers and no other HP software for managing the printer. Your pop ups may go away!
